The purpose of this Act is to prevent underage drinking and to bring Austenasian law concerning alcohol broadly in line with that of most other countries by introducing restrictions on the purchase and consumption of alcohol.

For the purposes of this Act, “alcohol” is defined as any spirits, wine, beer, cider, or other fermented, distilled or spirituous liquor in any state produced and/or sold for the purposes of consumption as a recreational beverage of or exceeding 0.5% alcohol content.

It is the misdemeanour of enabling underage drinking to:

Sell alcohol to a person under the age of 18.

Buy alcohol for a person under the age of 18 (unless bought for a person aged 16 or 17 to consume with a meal).

Permit a child under the age of criminal responsibility to consume alcohol.

Otherwise enable or permit through the provision or supply of alcohol the misdemeanour of underage drinking in regards to Paragraph 4 of this same Act.

It is the misdemeanour of underage drinking for a child over the age of criminal responsibility to consume alcohol unless with the permission and under the supervision of their parent/guardian while on the private property of the latter, or – for those aged 16 or 17 – unless bought to be consumed with a meal.

Town and City Councils and Governors may issue bye-laws forbidding or regulating the consumption and/or sale of alcohol in areas which are public property.

No part of this Act will be interpreted to forbid or may be used to prosecute the administering of an alcoholic substance to a child for medicinal purposes if prescribed by a doctor.
