# Unusual things to do in London

Looking for unusual things to do in London? Or for something quirky to do in London? You can have a look at the quirky world of micronations!

## What is a micronation?

A micronation is a self-declared country, it often looks and feels like a genuine country, but in essence is a voluntary organisation of people who dedicate their time to build something of their own.

Usually quite eccentric and virtually always non-violent, micronations have been described as hobbies or even life styles. You can find self-declared Emperors, their loyal subjects, presidents, dictators, and their empires, republics and countries. They have flags, their own laws, customs and anything else we can imagine as state-like, but in practice micronations have little influence over the actual land they claim. But that is not saying they are meaningless, often enough they stand for genuine causes, and make the lives of their "citizens" just a little more grandiose and eccentric; how many of us can say they are an Emperor, or that they are a Minister?

In essence, micronations are mostly fun, but often enough carry a lot of meaning behind them. Some micronations, such as Ladonia, have existed for three decades and have supported the art community and freedom of artistic expression ever since. Some micronations, such as Flandrensis, stand for protecting the environment, especially in the most extreme parts of the planet - the Antarctic.

## Are there any micronations in London?

There are many micronations in London, but few are as long-lived as the **Empire of Austenasia**! Located in the London borough of Sutton, the Empire of Austenasia's core, the capital city of Wrythe, is located entirely within London.

### Is Austenasia open to visitors?

Only with prior notice, as the territory of Wrythe is, behind all of the pomp of the Empire, private property owned by the Austen family. If you wish to visit, please [contact us](https://austenasia.org/about-us/contact/), but be mindful it may wholly depend on the circumstances.

You are free to visit the historical sites described in our history series on the [Year of the Three Emperors](https://austenasia.org/history/the-year-of-the-three-emperors/), which are mostly public spaces. If you do, please send us pictures!

Historically speaking, a few visitors have entered the Empire and have written blogs about it.
