With Lord John Gordon settling into a third non-consecutive term as Prime Minister, order has returned to Austenasian politics after the sorry events that took place earlier this week.
The previous Prime Minister, Lord Andrew Musgrave, was unceremoniously removed from office by a vote of no confidence on Tuesday 3rd upon unsuccessfully trying to overthrow Emperor Aggelos I and announcing he would no longer recognise the authority of the elected Parliament.
His Deputy, Lord Gordon – who had joined calls for Musgrave to resign during growing arguments immediately prior to the failed coup – succeeded him as Prime Minister upon his dismissal. Gordon previously served a highly successful term as Prime Minister from 2020-21, as well as a shorter tenure between February and July last year.
The expulsion of Andrew Musgrave from the premiership was welcomed by several of the Empire’s diplomatic partners; a celebratory group call attended by Austenasian politicians and foreign dignitaries was held late into the night on Austenasia’s official government server. Musgrave’s premiership had overseen the taking of a more isolationist stance by the Empire, leaving the GUM and suffering downturns in relationships with previously close nations such as Adammia and Wyvern.
New South Scotland announced that moves to explore independence from Austenasia – introduced while Musgrave was refusing to resign – had been cancelled. Meanwhile, in Caldari, Palasian forces invited in by Lord Gordon to bolster security in a show of force against Musgrave were withdrawn.
The Attorney-General, Sir Hugh McFarlane, has announced that the Ministry of Justice ultimately intends to bring treason charges against Musgrave, although Austenasian law does currently not allow for criminal trials to be held in absentia.
With Parliament having roundly ignored Musgrave’s attempt to dissolve it, the legislative Summer Session continues. This evening saw a vote of confidence in Lord Gordon’s leadership, followed by the introduction and discussion of new legislation proposing that national status be automatically offered alongside noble or chivalric honours.
His Imperial Majesty the Emperor made a public announcement yesterday morning, thanking all Austenasians for their “willingness to help end the recent crisis and restore order” to the nation, and wishing success to the government of Lord Gordon.
